It is expected that there will be shortages of all commodities, including grains, later in 2009, because of the mal-investment caused by current financial system. Specifically that prices of commodities are too low, and no one with bad debts is allowed to fail in mortgage and derivative sectors, but commodity producers can't even get capital to stay in production or develop future production.

I observed in the trial run in 2007, that here in Asia rice and wheat became scarce and high in price. While it seems no one likes to buy oatmeal. Oatmeal is a great grain to stock up on, because the bugs seems to like it a lot less, and it is one of the heathiest grains to eat. And it is so easy to prepare and so delicious. I just put some in a ceramic bowl with water, put in microwave for 15 seconds, then chop up a banana, then put in freezer for 45 seconds, voila! Very fast way to have a carbo recharge.

It is a much more compact grain per unit energy, and especially fiber, as compared to rice. And the bugs like it much less than flour. So it is easier to put in storage.

In 1994, I first visited Davao City in Southern Philippines, and the immigration dept consisted of a single room with a few desks and 2 guys, 3 if the smiling immigration commissioner was around.

Now in process or plan to be added are an Interpol communications link and monitoring cameras throughout the 3rd story immigration building, where the commissioner has a private office on the 3rd floor and is accessible only with permission from ground floor staff.

Also the cost in immigration fees for 1 year tourist stay has increased from $500 in 2007 to $1000 per year in 2008.

Progress right?

Perhaps the "powers that be" are cutting off all the "perpetual traveler" escape routes.

Been so busy hiding in the house programming, that I was a bit out-of-touch with reality. Downtown today in Chinese trading area of Davao City (Philippines), I sourced 200 liter tin coated steel (54 gallon) barrels for storing diesel fuel for $8, and 50kg sacks of $0.50 per kg brown or red rice (even less for white rice). That is 110lbs for $26. Can you find such prices in USA?

Maybe you are just right partly.Yes ,there is a major global financial crisis ,including and USA, but I think everything will get well ,it won't last long. We ,you ,me and all others should be optimistic.Life is just like that,sometimes good,sometimes bad,but good times are always much more.

Yes , China has serious problem with an aging population, not enough babies, especially lacking females in the youngest generation. But it's not giant mess,even ,not a mess.Hehehee....

After moving from the west coast a few years ago, we decided to stay put in Minnesota. Pretty cold indeed but still find the relations with neighbors a real positive around this area. If times get tough, it is the kind of area people will tend to help each other out a lot. With our unexpected baby now 2 months old, we are enjoying her wonderful smiles, growing a big garden, sharing things with neighbors and worrying a lot less about the financial markets. While we thought of relocating out of the country at one point, fleeing is not gonna happen for us as we will have to dig in and make the best of whatever may come right where we are.

A retired Corpus Christi, TX Sergeant confirmed to me in 2006, that all local law enforcement in the country had been deputized as federal marshalls and would be called to serve the federal govt in the case of any homeland security threat (i.e. terrorism).
